Making an online purchase can be down right difficult when you can't actually hold the item right
in your hands for examination. All you have to go by is a photo, description, and a bunch of
measurements. Then nothing is more disappointing than to receive your item and the fit is not
correct. With the addition of a bulky cloth diaper, knowing how to measure clothing and diaper
covers can be quite complicated. So, this page will give you some detailed assistance in making
any online purchase or helping to determine sizing on a custom order.
First we will begin with longies, shorties, and capris. Let's start with the inseam. Just what is
an inseam? The inseam is the length from the crotch down to the end of the leg (or down to
however far you would like your capris or shorties to come). With the addition of a cloth diaper,
this can add a few inches of bulk to the crotch, hence making the inseam needed less than
what it would be with a thin disposable diaper. The easiest way to measure is to take
measurements from a pair of pants or longies that fit really well. You won't have to battle a
squirmy baby this way. Or, with baby laying flat, you can extend the leg and take a
measurement with a diaper on. Just measure from the crotch down to the ankle. With shorts
and capris, the same principles apply.
In the photos below, you can see I first measured Caleb laying flat with his leg relaxed. I took
the measurement down to his ankle bone which was 10 1/2". The longies were then made with
a 10 1/2" inseam as well and you can see they fit perfectly with no need to roll them up. With
correct measurements, it is possible to have a perfectly tailor made fit.

Next let's look at the rise. The rise is the measurement from the waist (at the bellybutton), down
the crotch and back up the back side up to the waist again. Again, it is much easier to take
measurements from a cover that fits baby already. When taking measurements from a cover, I
simply lay the cover flat and measure from the waist to the crotch and multiply by 2 which gives
me the rise. The soaker below is 9 1/2" from the top to bottom. It is exactly the same on the
back side as well so this means the rise is 19" (or 9 1/2" X 2). You want to make sure your cover
will totally cover the diaper so your don't have diaper peeking out at the waist. I couldn't really
photograph Caleb too well while attempting to show you how LOL, but what you want to do is
start at about the bellybutton with a measuring tape and measure down the crotch, through the
legs, and back up the backside up to the waistline again (again make sure you go to right above
the diaper to make sure it is all covered). This will give you an accurate rise measurement.

Last is the waist measurement. What you need to do is take a tape measure and gently
measure around the bellybutton (where your child's pants normally sit) and that will give you
your waist measurement. An elasticized waist is designed to fit a wide variety of sizes but still
must be checked against your child's waist measurement. This particular cover is 15" at rest
(as the photos shows). It can stretch comfortably up to 23". When I make a custom cover for a
child, I set the waist so it is a few inches smaller than your child's actual waist measurement.
You want the cover to gently hug your child and stay in place comfortably. If the waist at rest is
exactly what your child's waist is, it can actually be too loose and you will find the cover wants
to slip down. You will find they crawl right out of the longies or a walking toddler will find they
keep slipping down as well. You also do not want your child to be on the maximum waist
measurement. While the measurement may state it can stretch comfortably up to 23", there is
not much room beyond that and I would highly suggest moving to the next size up for the best fit
and ability to get the most wear from your cover.

If you should have any other questions regarding measuring your child, please let me know.
Don't be worried about being super exact and right down to the millimeter.... these covers are
nice and stretchy and as long as you are close, they will fit wonderfully :)
Woollybottoms Sizing
This is a general guidline of Woollybottoms sizing. Always check measurements of each individual pair as each Woollybottom exhibits uniqe properties. Babies are built differently and occasionally you may see a pair that doesnt fit exactly into the table below.
